The Official Languages Commission (OLC) was established by Act No. 18 of 1991. The main object of the OLC is to recommended principles of policy relating to the use of the Official Languages, and to monitor and supervise compliance with the provisions of Chapter IV of the Constitution. The other objectives include taking all actions and measures as are necessary to ensure the use of languages referred to in Article 18 of the Constitution, to promote the appreciation of the (use of ) the Official Languages and to conduct investigations and to take remedial action in response to complaints received by the OLC.
Presently the OLC comprise Mr. Raja Collure, ( Chairman) Prof. A.V. Suraweera , Prof. S. Thillainathan, Prof. J. B. Dissanayake, Prof. Somarathne Balasooriya and Mr. N. P. M Saifdeen ( Members ). Mr. Senarath Gunasena ( Commissioner of Official Languages ) is its Secretary.
